The Executive Director TEAMEnvironment KENYA, Mr. Mathew Ochanda, was recognized and appreciated with a prestigious award during the just concluded inaugural Climate Action, Planetary Health, Agroecology and Energy Conference that was held at the Kabarak University from 9th to 12th, July 2025.
This landmark event brought together climate actors, environment stakeholders, environmental champions, higher learning institutions, government agencies, public and private institutions, environmental community benefit organizations (cbo) formally known as NGO’s, youth and women groups-organizations, and community stakeholders who came to showcase their climate action innovations and help to advance the climate action, sustainable agriculture, and planetary health agenda. The award was presented to Mr. Ochanda by prof. in acknowledgment of his unwavering commitment to environmental conservation, youth empowerment, and his tireless efforts in mobilizing communities across Kenya towards climate resilience.
As the founder and director of TEK, Mr. Ochanda by Prof. John Ochola the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Kabarak University. Mr. Ochanda has been on the front row to spearhead numerous climate action and environmental initiatives at the grassroots level in different counties across the country and therefore promoting tree planting (growing) in schools, institution and at community level, conducted environmental education, helped in environmental policy guiding and advocacy. His leadership has not only elevated the voice of young environmentalists but has also strengthened collaborative action at both local and national levels.
In his acceptance remarks, the Executive Director TEK emphasized the need for individual and collective effort to doing good to mother nature and the environment not just for ourselves but for the good and benefit of those that shall come after us noting that, “We did not inherit this earth from our fore fathers but have borrowed from our children” by this understanding we a duty mandate and responsibility to leave it better that we found it for posterity through intergenerational responsibility. This award is not just a personal honor—it is a recognition of the power of collective effort to climate action and the unwavering spirit of environmental enthusiasts,” he said.
The four-day event marked a significant milestone in Kenya’s climate action landscape, featuring climate solution exhibitions, panel discussions, paper presentation and youth forums. Mr. Ochanda’s recognition stands as a symbol of the impact dedicated individuals can make in transforming climate change challenges into opportunities for growth, building resilience, and healing of the Earth.
